How to make homemade energy bars

Pile of homemage energy barsCarrying some sort of food is wise on any long ride, to stop what cyclists call bonking (which marathon runners call “hitting the wall”, and I call “running out of puff”).

A quick bite can perk you up surprisingly quickly if you find yourself flagging.

There are all sorts of premade gels, jellys, bars and snacks to choose from, but if you’re going on a long ride a few times a week, these can get pricey.

Making your own bars is one solution. It’s much cheaper, but it does take a little time.

Free burger and bike check-up

BBQBike Week is coming up in the UK, whatever that means. Lots of events are planned, though.

One that caught my eye is being held by Lambeth council in London. They’re throwing a barbecue and check-up day where you can grab a free burger while someone fixes your bike for you.

It’s taking place next to the Bandstand in Ruskin Park on 18th June from 5 to 8pm, and could be worth a visit if you’re not too handy with a toolkit, or like free food, or both.
