Penal peloton riding the Tour de France

Alcatraz prison cellHundreds of French inmates will race 1,400 miles in their very own version of the Tour de France.

More than a hundred prison guards will be following the pack, also on bikes, to make sure no one gets away.

Still, as escape opportunities go, they don’t get much better than this.

If I was one of those guards assigned to the tour, I’d be keeping my eyes on the guy quoted by the Telegraph;

“It’s a kind of escape for us, a chance to break away from the daily reality of prison,” said Daniel, a 48-year-old prisoner in the western city of Nantes, at the official launch of the event.

That kind of word play just seems a little suggestive to me. [Telegraph]
