Fixed-gear tricks, 110 years ago


Everyone knows that Thomas Edison brought the world the phonograph and the first long-lasting light bulb, but few realise he also invented the fixed-gear trick video.

If you thought that neon-clad hipsters dreamed the idea up no more than a few years ago, think again.

Edison invented one of the first video cameras and used it to capture all sorts of things, including this skit by bike-trickster Eugene Neidert.

The video rather deflates the argument that there’s a lot of innovation going on with track bike freestyle at the moment – these guys were doing the same stuff more than 100 years ago, on bikes that weighed twice as much. [The Metro]
